My grandfather recently passed away and left a beautiful show car in his estate.

We can't figure out if the car is a 1940 Special Series 46 Business Coupe or a 1940 Special Series 46s Sport Coupe. Grandpa always called it a 46s business coupe, which doesn't exist.

How can you tell the difference? I have searched the internet for pictures, and they are conflicting.

This car is black, has a hard top has 2 doors, but has NO tire over the running board like some pics I have seen.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Diane McMonagle

Diane - Go to the Buick Club of America: http://www.buickclub.org/ You'll find folks there who have the kind of info you need. Good luck.

If it has a back seat or jump seats it's probably not a business

What would be called the 'hat shelf' on most cars extends nearly to the back of the seats in the business coupe, and there's a small closet under it. It was meant to store clothes for a traveling businessman in the days before Holiday Inns.

Search the 'Automotive News' web site, they did a write up on that car during the past year. Apparently it is a rare car.
