BTW, check your points too. Bad firing because of the condenser can cause arching and pit the point facing.

I've heard of this happening when the coil goes bad.

Sounds like an electrical breakdown due to heat, zero in on coil, condenser, points, wiring both low and hi tension. let us know what happens.

It sounds like a bad coil (or condenser) and is the same problem I had with a 39 60hp I had. The problem went away when the coil was relocated away from the front of the engine.
From this experience I learned not to assume any new or NOS part is good. First get a coil condenser checker as they are less than $20 (I don't think I have ever paid more than $5) and test all coils and condensers you plan on using, including brand new modern ones as they can be bad too. Heat saturate all coils that you plan on using with the tester. If all you do is drive and not show (or worse parade) than make a plate and put a modern epoxy coil away from the heat.
You can donate the $25 to the March of Dimes.

Perhaps vapor lock, but I'm thinking condenser. Have you tried a voltage drop??? It could be as simple as a connection that is bad anyway, but when the vehicle heats up the resistance increases beyond the point where it'll work.
