Hey Guys, I'm investigating putting a small block Chevy into my 53 ford customline. Is there motor mounts that will allow this to happen smoothly (without welding!)? Also if , where would I find the tranny mounts for a turbo 350 tranny?

For what it is worth, you can drop a FORD 5.0 (302) or 5.4 (352W) into that '53 Customline a lot easier than will find sticking a Chevy block into it may be. The Ford Block should basically drop right in.

as the saying goes, run a Ford in your Ford. if you want to use a sbc buy a chevy.

Yes, Butch's Rod Shop in Dayton Ohio has 'em. THe kit runs $142, although you'll have to bend the drag link 1' down to clear the pan. I would actually recommend a 302/aod, since none of those mods are necessary, the package is lighter and narrower (easier to fit headers on) and would keep your ford all ford. I'm not brand conscious really (I love 'em all) I just like the way fords fit in early cars like yours (plus I hate modifiying steering stuff.)

The orig flathead was about the same size as the Y-block, 239(54)-312 (292/312 was around til sometime after 62 in trucks, upto 62 in cars). Great motor in my opion but still hard to find parts for BUT a drop in.
A small block ford, 289/302 will drop in fairly easy - oil pan is the issue, front sump versus rear. Might have to find a special oilpan.
An FE can be found and will fit farily easy with the exception of the gas pedal linkage - have to do some fabricating there. BUT they can be a bit expensive if you really want to make it scream! this is what my brother and I just put into his 57 Fairlane. it was worthit!! Tranny options are there too. without worrying about fitting stuff - c4/fmx(akac5) and C6 all fit in my brothers car with no problem.
I am leaning toward a 351W in my 63 fairlane. You have more room, a windsor or cleveland will fit fairly easily, weigh about the same as the flathead (give or take a 100 lbs) and parts are around! 351 with a tranny should be easy to find, meaning relatively cheap. everything is relative.
Depends on what you want to do. the 53, I had one, with a flathead, a good carb and a little work would scoot along pretty good. I used to get beat by 283 powerpack chevvies but...no big thing.
If you want a cruiser, you have lots of chices. If you want a sleeper, you still have a good bit of choices. your budget decides! best of luck and let us know what ya do please!!

This application, a dry sump system would work with well, rather than building a special pan if a front sump cannot be found. As cost effective, a lot more trick in appearance, and contrary to some belief, very streetable. I have one on a BB-Mopar and no problems for 40K+ miles.

I have a '47 Ford with a 302 Ford/c-4/8' combo. It fits great and looks right. Use a bronco oil pan and pick-up. The ford is lighter than the flat motor or the chev.

I'm planning a similar installation in a 53 Merc. Any thoughts on putting a 460 with a C6 in there? I'm a little concerned about the extra weight and I don't want to monkey around too much with the steering. I checked with Butch's Rod Shop about mounts, but they said they only handle small block stuff. Any ideas about sources for a big block swap kit? Thanks for the info...
