Does anybody know if a late model auto trans will bolt up to an early (52) plymouth flathead

There may be an adapter available and there are places that will make something to fit. Suggest that you get a copy of Hemmings Motor News magazine and poke about the ads and you will probably find what you are looking for. Your big problem is that you are trying to do something that isn't very common and you might want to consider using a slant 6 (for which auto trannys were mated to) in there for the engine.

Industrial tugs made in the sixties used the Chrysler industrial flathead and had an adapter that mated a Torqueflight to it. Don't know if the later industrial has the same rear block bolt pattern as a '52 (I suspect they do). Try: http://www.see-seco.com They might have the parts or know of a source.

From '55 through '59, the small block flatheads were available with the 2 speed Powerflite. This should be a bolt on except for floor and maybe frame clearance. You will have to add a crossmember to support the rear transmission

mount. This will have to be aligned *very carefully* because interactoin with the rear engine mounts could easily overstress the transmission case.

You might want to think this through a bit though, since performance with an autoshifter behind a 97 HP/175 ft/lb engine might be a bit sluggish.Especially

so because not many auto shifters are tuned to match an engine that hits peak torque at 1200 rpm's. It would be a much easier conversion to go with the '53 - '54 Plymouth Hydrive unit. These were a heavy duty 3 speed manual coupled with a 2.8:1 torque converter so you could drive it like a Dynaflow if you didn't feel like shifting, or go through the gears like a manual if you need more acceleration.
