Hey guys, I was wondering if there is a good modern brake fluid that anyone knows of that will substitute for older brake fluid (Delco Heavy Duty) for mid-fifties Buicks. -Thanks- Ian

I use DOT 5 in all my old cars, as do most collectors. Drain. flush and fill, DO NOT add to other types.

Unless you have recently done the brakes, (last 3-5 years) don't flush and fill with DOT 5 (silicone) Yes it is the best, but it will stick and gum up if any surfaces that get contaminated with old fluid, such as what would happen in old soluble rubber. I would only advise using the silicone DOT 5 if you plan on using all new rubber parts including the flex lines going to the wheels. Any good DOT 3 or 4 would do fine, just make sure its from a fresh bottle and hasn't been sitting on your shelf for 5 years. Pretty much all the brake fluid manufactured today is better than what was in the 50's. If you haven't changed those rubber hoses in the last 10 years, now is the time. I have had very good luck with 'wood alcohol' or denatured alcohol for flushing metal lines. Its your life. Dan
