The California Air Resources Board Final Smog Check II Evaluation was published in July 2000. CARB states that they did not meet the Federal Ozone SIP Requirements. As a result look for the follow changes in Smog Check in California (http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/smogchk2/smogchk2.htm Chapter VI):
* Improved identification of gross polluters and more stringent vehicle repairs. Use Remote Sensing. * Sending more vehicles to Test-Only (Ping Pong: Test-Only, Test & Repair, Test-Only Certification) * Implement more stringent inspection standards. (Tighten Smog Check cut points and implement full repair). * Expand the areas in the Enhanced I/M program (dynamometer) and number of vehicles so tested. * Eliminate 30-year rolling exemption and 1966-1973 biennial smog exemption. Possible Annual Smog Testing of older vehicles. Make these ^^^^^^^^^^ vehicles available for crushing. Remember a new vehicle is exempt from ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Smog Test the first four years of its life and may be extended to six years. AB1105

This is the same CARB that authorized the use of MTBE based on assurances from the gasoline refiners and is now 'discovering' it is a suspected and probably will be found to be a cancer causing agent, though only after vast amounts of ground water have been contaminated with MTBE?
Wonderful. Wait until CARB discovers ozone is made up of oxygen. It will then outlaw the presence of oxygen in the state of CA....
Sincerely,

Hi,
I followed the link to the BAR smog website and looked around for some information concerning my cars. All my wife and I own are pre-1960 Cadillac's, a couple of 59's, a 60 and a 49 Cadillac motorhome.
I am waiting for a potential job offer in Newport Beach, CA,
While I do not want to live in California for a host of reasons, I would like to accept the job, off hand, can someone here tell me if I will be able to register and drive my Cadillac's in CA
thanks,
Mike

The car will have no problem in the state. There will be no smog requirements at all. I suggest that you go the extra mile and find some old plates (several places have them for sale, probably about $50-$75 for most years) for the model year that the car got manufactured (make sure that the plates are guaranteed to be a valid registerable number or you can't use them) and when you title the car, ask to use that plate as the YOM plate titling method. You will not only be able to run the car with that set of plates but you will also be a nice advertising for the old cars. Might warn you that the gas prices have been about the highest (except Hawaii and a few localized areas) in the US for some time now. You also want to keep the cars in nice condition and properly running as you can still get stuck on the gross polluter (for those cars, it's a fixit ticket at the least) if you are putting out smoke with the car. I might also note that the registeration will not be cheap as you will probably also be paying a sales tax on the car of 8% or more. Yearly reg. fee will be $48 for the car with a YOM plate and $38 without at the present.

Little known fact on sales tax: If one is importing a car that one already owns, there is the sales/use tax, but there is supposedly also a credit of sales tax previously paid to the other state. The DMV probably won't want to give that to you, but a claim mailed to the Board of Equalization probably will. I don't recall the CA R&TC section offhand.

Please do not move here if you insist on further polluting the fragile California ecosystem like an asshole.

Well Robert, my one 59 only has 63,000 miles on it and does not smoke, thank you very much. My other 59 runs great with 87,000 miles and also does not smoke. My 60 has a brand spanking new engine, 0 miles. All cars have 'igniter ignitions' for better efficiency and better gas mileage.
I personally do not want to move to California, to many liberals for me. I also do not want to endanger my children. But I would really like the job, so much so that I could endure the socialist environment and make enough money to live away from the bad elements and more than likely home school my children.
I do not know why you would say that my intent on moving to California is to further pollute the fragile ecosystem, (like an asshole as you so kindly put it).
That being said... I forgive you.

Yep, just ignore the environment. As long as a somewhat pleasant environment exists for us, right?
