Hi,
How much should the timing on a '60 Cadillac 390 be retarded if using less than the '100 octane' the shop manual calls for? Should cooler plugs be used? This is a parade car and doesn't get driven daily.
Thanks!

1.) Don't use cooler plugs! They'll foul big-time at slow 'parade' running speeds! In fact, run one step hotter than standard.
2.) At parade speeds you'll probably be able to run stock timing with 93 octane gas. Other wise, back off timing about 1/2 degree for each octane number lower than recommended. Keep in mind that today's octane is rated different - in the old days it was Motor octane only - now it's rated at the average of Research Octane & Motor Octane - that is, (R+M) / 2. So, old 100 octane is about the same as current 94 (Sunoco). You probably have some carbon build-up, so I'd run 2 degrees retard. The best way is to keep advancing the timing until you get pinging during acceleration.
