I'm trying to track down a car I once owned. It was a 1968 Olds 442 which I owned in high school in 1974 and 1975. I do not have the VIN number but I have my old license plate number. I've searched the county title department. Their records don't go back that far. They called the State of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and they could not find anything. I figure once I get the VIN number, I can proceed with my search to see if the car still exists.
The dealership where I bought it burned to the ground 20 years ago and I don't know who the car was sold to after I had it. Does anyone out there have any suggestions for finding the VIN number?
Thanks,

I'd start in you own house. Look for old registration cards that you took to the DMV for license renewals, the reciepts you obtained from whomever you purchased the car from or sold it to, old insurance papers, that sort of stuff. Another place you can try is your local police department if you were like me and got a couple tickets (hehehe). They work closely with the DMV so I wouldn't hold much hope tho. If your parents bought you the car (or gave it to you), they may have some old records in the basement you can look thru.
Since your states DMV doesn't keep records on file ( I assume you went down there and actually looked at the micro-fiche files) that go back as far as you need, call them and ask what happened to the records. Were they given to the historical society or the library? Or destroyed?
Hope some of this helps,
