Mmm, the only 454 I'm familiar with was a Chevy engine. A 1966 T-bird should have a 390 or, optionally as designated by a 'Q' in the appropriate part of the data plate, a 428.

During the *late* 60s the family of engines comprising the 390 and 428 was gradually superseded by the 429 and then the 460, a newer design of big block. It is not unheard of for those to be retrofitted to an early or mid 60s T-bird with a blown engine (sometimes accompanied with a C-6 transmission, which *was* correct for some '66 Birds as the Cruise-O- Matic was phased out), but they weren't original.

You can find out more about your car by taking down all the numbers off the data plate on the driver's door and looking at the decoder on http://www.tbird.org

OOP'S, My typo error! You are correct the engine in the 1966 t/bird is indeed a 428cid 345hp 4 barrel. Thanks to all that have brought my error to my attention.

Hadn't thought of any hotrod tricks that advanced, and at any rate, I'd be surprised to see them on that era of Thunderbird. It would be really going the extra mile to wring some performance out of what could most honestly be described as a heavy luxury car with some styling cues from its sports-car past.

AFAIK Ford never put the 427 (never mind with a special crank etc.) in the T-bird; and on the 64-66 body style at least, a low hoodline and a surprisingly narrow engine compartment (that low-riding body equates to a lot of wheelhouse intrusion) limit what you can do on both the induction and the exhaust sides of the performance game with any engine. A Galaxie 500, now, that's a different story, and a different car, which merely happens to be about the same size...

I had a 64 Merc Park Lane that had if I remember right a 427. Did the come in the Mercs? It was a 4 bbl and it said something about hi performance on the air cleaner. It was a good parts hauler for the 62 Impala I put together when I was 17. With that roll down back window you could haul almost anything. I sold it for 50.00 back in 76.
