I am draining the trans and differential of my 37 Pierce Arrow 8.
What should I use to loosen up the sludge and flush out both trans and differential
The trans and differential are on the car but I have removed the engine.
Thanks

If you're determined to 'flush out' the tranny and differential on your Pierce, be prepared to replace the grease seals as well, since the engine is already out. Otherwise, the seals will most likely start leaking shortly thereafter. Kerosene is as good a detergent as any to wash out old grease and dirt. Install new grease with at least 140 weight, available at truck stops. Ed Jacobowitz

Use a petroleum based solvent, if you are not planning on disassembling the units. Kerosene or diesel work wekk and are not as volitile as gasoline. If you are going to disassemble the units, use a heated waterbased degreaser. I have used Simple Green heated to 120 deg in the parts cleaner, or if you care to work with caustics a heated lie solution will take everything off including the paint. Apply a low current and you can even remove the rust.
