A '73 Plymouth Duster that I still have 13 years later. The car was a three speed (on the tree, of course) and when i showed up at the test site I was especially anxious to demonstrate the fact that I had (or so i thought) mastered the art of heel and toe downshifting after countless hours of practice at matching revs. I took the test and thought I had done really well and was feeling pretty full of myself for not grinding the gears while using the trans to slow down instead of the brakes. Then the examiner handed my the evaluation form, right at the top was the box for 'poor use of gears-manual' with a big red check mark next to it. Oops! Thankfully that was my only deduction so I still passed but I still keep that form around as a reminder that I'm not half as good a driver as I sometimes think I am.

1966 Yellow Mercury Monterey. It was mom's, and really sweet.

1970 Chrysler Town & Country complete with bad woodgrain decals. Everything went fine until the parallel parking. Ended up about 3 feet from the curb.

It was Mom's brand-new 1980 Pontiac Lemans 4-door sedan with a 267 and automatic...

It was probably the most boring car I've ever driven next to the Plymouth Horizon back at the driving school...

Soon after that, I bought my first car. It was a '70 Monte Carlo with a two-barrel 350 and powerglide. I wish I had one like it today...

[And I passed on an opportunity to buy one with a 454 last year because I needed the money for other things like rent and an income tax installment.]

1989. I had two choices. My 67 GTO with an automatic or an 81 VW Rabbit diesel with a stick. Now, conventional wisdom (according to most folks at that time) was to drive the automatic. But, I wanted to be able to parallel park the car (which was a requirement), and I felt a little bit more comfy in the Rabbit. I passed just fine.

The GTO was my first car. I still have it.

'51 Olds 88 2 dr hdtp. Damn thing would only start when it was cold so I left it running outside the DMV office. When I told the examiner why he asked 'What happens if the engine dies during the test?' I said 'We'll have to wait for it to cool off or walk back.' He kept the test route close to the DMV office.

1961 Rambler American Station Wagon, 6 cyl. 3 on the tree. Rear seat folded forward, front seats folded back. Never could get into the drive-in with that car.

Cool! I passed my test in my folk's 1966 Red Mercury Monterey. And then about a year later I hit a parked car and had to replace the entire front end of the car (Dad said I broke it, I had to fix it).

Great car... Was still in real good shape when my folks sold it.

1964 CHRYSLER WINDSOR 361 the car was so easy to drive with your fingertips I got shit for not having a firm grasp on the wheel. That was dads car in 1967 and I think it was one of the nicest driving and handling cars I ever drove. Barry Lee

A 1970 Dodge Polara with 383 V8 sedan. I took my test in 1972 in the snow. My right rear tire went over a curb but I still passed the test since there was 3 inches on snow on the ground and the curb was hidden. Thankfully that year they had just eliminated the parallel parking requirement. It took me another year before I HAD too parallel park. Was a breeze after that. That car was big. Easily fit 3-4 in front, 4 in back. The trunk would hold an 8 foot Christmas tree with the trunk lid closed! Those were the days.

My first car was a '62 Pontiac Starchief. I paid $75.00 for that p.o.s. car. I had to take it through inspection five times before it passed. For my driver's test, I borrowed my mother's '68 Dodge Coronet 440. I managed to pass, even though I couldn't get used to the car not pulling hard to the right. Both cars have since been turned into razor blades.
