I bought a timing light in a garage sale and would like to know which wire goes where. I've seen many people perform the job before, but I never got around to doing it. The light has one red clip (I guess for battery), one green clip (don't know) and one clip with a spring at the end (I goes goes on number 1 plug. I'd sure appreciate your help on this one. The green wire goes on the (-) negative post of the coil. (the wire that goes from the distributor to the coil). This is for older cars. I don't do newer cars because they're shit.

Red goes to positive on battery and there should be a black for the negative side of battery.

Other wire does go to #1 cylinder plug wire.

Coil? Is there a tach built in? Usually with three wires, the red goes to battery +, the other goes to battery -, and the spring goes between the #1 sparkplug and it's cable. Remove the cable at the sparkplug, snap the spring over the plug, and snap the cable onto the other end of the

The timing light needs 12v, GND and trigger. Red to 12v, green to gnd. and trgger on #1 plug.

Is it OK to connect it not at plug, but at distributor end of the wire?

Yes, but it's possible that it may pickup the voltage from another wire, but I've never had problems.

I've done it before. Headers make it hard to use non-inductive type timing lights on the plug side. Sometimes it is eaier to find the cylinder that is opposite #1 (#6 on Small-block Chevy's), you can time it from there also, if it's easier to get at. #1 and #6 fire at 360 crank degrees apart, so the mark will be in the right place (assuming it's a Chevy). This is just incase you can't get the spring to fit on the dis. cap.
